Theremin master classes for people with dementia, in Japan

Masami Takeuchi:
It is extremely difficult to play the theremin because they have neither keys nor frets. Playing them requires such intense concentration that the mental strain can even make you feel hot. I suspect this is due to increased blood flow to the brain. It took me seven years to reach a level of mastery sufficient to release a CD.

I have long believed that the specific techniques involved in playing the theremin are effective in preventing dementia. Using the more user-friendly Matryomin—a theremin shaped like a matryoshka doll—I conduct workshops on playing the instrument that are tailored for people with dementia.

I have now successfully digitized the Matremin, eliminating the need for tuning. The barrier to entry for playing has been lowered even further. We believe that combining the easy-to-use digital Matriomin with the Matriomin session method for dementia treatment could be an effective preventive measure against dementia. We hope to contribute to society by leveraging the technologies, ideas, and experience we have accumulated in conducting sessions.
