Two skills are combined here. Repeated notes are separated by the volume hand, but the volume hand must stay still while the fingers of the pitch hand move to the next pitch. Playing those notes legato — as a slur — trains the fingers to change position without any help from articulation. Keep the two hands independent: one shapes the sound, the other finds the notes.
