The very first step in playing the theremin is learning the “pitch line” — the invisible path your hand travels toward the vertical antenna to raise and backwards to lower the note. Move your playing arm between your shoulder and the antenna as if it were attached to an invisible string, and let your ear, not your eyes, guide the hand. Keep your fingers collected and your wrist straight. Play slowly and legato at a comfortable volume, focusing entirely on the sound. This exercise builds the foundation of all theremin technique: the agreement between your ear and your arm about where each note lives in the air.
Move your hand between your chest and mid part of the antennae. Collect your fingers in a fist, for stability.
